Constructors of the Forest

About & Subscribe

Aloha, my name is Spencer Jenkins. I am an AP Environmental student at Mililani High School. For my YES Futures Project, I partnered with the Hawaii VINE Project to see how non-native bird species are affecting Hawaii’s forests. I monitored birds at Ekahanui Reserve, Moanalua Valley Trail, and Pu’u Ohia Trail. My project took place during the 2016-2017 school year. I worked with a mentors who will helped me collect data on point counts and mist netting. They also provided access to the sites. By monitoring non-native birds, we can see how they will positively or negatively affect the native forests. Because most of the native bird species have gone extinct, the non native birds will have to fill the roles of the native birds through seed distribution which will carry on the life of the native forests. This will also preserve the beauty of the native forests for future generation to indulge in.
